Socialism: Enemy of Liberty

Cory Bernardi warns about how collectivist ideology captured key institutions and is reshaping society (even centre-right parties) through the quiet advance of socialism.

Socialism: Enemy of Liberty

Editor's Note: Confidential Daily recently received one reader's feedback that we have become too critical of the Liberal National Coalition and that Labor is the enemy. While Labor (and the Greens) are the overt enemies of freedom, the reality is that elements of the Liberal and National Parties have also been captured by Left orthodoxies. The following article, originally titled "Understanding the Enemy," was penned by Cory Bernardi some five years ago, in which he outlines that the socialist threat is pervasive in government and even in centre-right parties.

It’s easy to dismiss a series of apparently random events as just a coincidence. But to do that when it comes to the authoritarian agenda of the leftists doesn’t do them justice, and it's positively dangerous.

They left activists understand the power of tactics in implementing strategy. In fact, they are much better at it than conservatives are.

Us conservatives love freedom, autonomy, decentralisation, and what Burke called ‘little platoons’. The left love collectivism and whenever it comes to the crunch, they always fall into line.

That’s how they have managed to exert such an iron grip on the institutions that were traditionally designed to protect our values and precious freedoms.

Our parliaments are dominated by leftist ideology. In some cases, like the Greens, it is overt, but even in centre-right parties, there is a strong thread of the big government and globalist agenda.

They have commandeered our education system by rewriting history and introducing poisonous social teachings, in effect, brainwashing our children whilst making them dumber. It’s no surprise that literacy and numeracy standards are plummeting while the little social justice warriors created know all about the apparent horrors of climate change or the flexibility of gender choice.

They have also created new bodies, stacked with their own kind, reaching across traditional boundaries, to moralise, lecture, and provide authority to a global agenda.

It’s an agenda designed to entrench power in a relative few while stripping the rest of us of autonomy. It’s an agenda that thrives on deceit and misdirection. It appropriates language to make even the malignant seem benign.

It’s an agenda that every thinking person needs to be concerned about because it is effectively global socialism under a number of new names.

History shows that socialism doesn’t work.

As Margaret Thatcher famously said:

The trouble with socialism is that you soon run out of other people’s money.

But the problems run far deeper than that.

Socialism is about control. It is about preventing people from being their best selves in the futile quest to create equality.

I say futile because people can never be truly equal. Someone will always be better than you in one way or another; they might have more than you, be taller, thinner, shorter, whatever… There will always be differences.

Conservatives celebrate those differences and allow the individual to decide how best to harness their own unique gifts and skills.

Socialists want to make that decision for you. And when someone else makes decisions for you, you can lay London to a brick that the choice they make will more likely be of benefit to them rather than to you.

Understanding your enemy is the key to defeating them. And make no mistake, the leftist agenda is an enemy of the people.

Thought for the Day

“The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”
Winston Churchill
