This Visual Capitalist chart lays out the future of global nuclear power in stark gigawatts. China dominates with 60.9 GW already operating and a massive 124.9 GW prospective — putting it on track to become the world’s biggest nuclear power producer. The United States still holds the largest current fleet at 102.5 GW, followed by France, while ambitious newcomers like Uganda (18 GW), Poland, Türkiye, and even Kenya are jumping in. Australia? Completely absent — zero operating capacity and zero prospective builds.
While the rest of the world races ahead, Australia sits on nearly 28% of the planet’s known uranium reserves — the largest share on Earth — yet maintains a full legislative ban on civilian nuclear power. Our entire electricity generation capacity (coal, gas, wind, solar, hydro) sits around 80–85 GW, but China’s nuclear alone is already closing in on that scale, and their total future pipeline dwarfs us. Beakout puts it bluntly: China’s building a nuclear empire… Australia’s building excuses.
