The Union Cannot Hold

Back in 1994, I recall how incredulous I was at the opening of the tunnel connecting England and France.

I mention this today because it was opened on this day, twenty seven years ago.

At the time I considered it a marvel of engineering and couldn't wait to use it for myself. While I'm yet to undergo the experience of use, I am still in awe of the achievement.

The 'chunnel' as it is known is more than fifty kilometres long and features the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world.
