It Begins Tonight: 3 Very Important Nights For Australia

Tonight we begin.

Over the next three special nights, I’ll be joining Peter Costello, Martin North, and Pat Mesiti for a conversation I believe Australians urgently need to be having.

Because something has changed in this country.

You don't need an economist to tell you that.

You can feel it.

You feel it when you pay the mortgage.
When you go to the supermarket.
When the electricity bill arrives.
When you look at what it costs your children to buy their first home.
When you see what the government takes from your pay...
...and wonder how much more it may take in the future.

For decades, Australians were given a fairly simple message:

Work hard.
Save.
Buy your home.
Invest.
Build your super.
Take responsibility for yourself.

And if you did those things, you had a reasonable chance of creating a secure future.

But increasingly, Australians who followed that advice are asking:

“Have I done everything I was told to do... only for the rules to change?”

That’s part of what we’ll be discussing over these three nights.

Government debt.
Taxation.
Superannuation.
Property.
Cost of living.
The opportunities available to younger Australians.
And whether Australia can still be a country where ordinary people can build extraordinary lives.

But I want to make something clear.

This cannot just become three nights of complaining about what we’ve lost.

Because that doesn’t help you.
It doesn’t help your family.
And it certainly doesn’t change your financial future.

The far more important conversation is this:

Where is the next opportunity?

If the rules have changed, how do you change with them?

If some of the traditional paths to wealth have become harder, where should Australians be looking next?

What opportunities are still available?

And what decisions should you be making now so that five or ten years from today you’re not looking backwards and saying:

“I saw what was happening... and I missed the boat.”

That’s why I agreed to be part of these three nights.

Pat will be asking the hard questions.
