With conflict building across the globe, I often reflect on the role Australia should play.
It's always been my view that our nation should participate in international affairs, and in the past, that engagement has included support for going to war.
However, in recent years, I have come to understand that war is often contrived and engineered by feckless politicians (and those hidden in the shadows), usually for political purposes.
The current theory is that Europe and America both need war to serve as an excuse for being broke. Extreme measures (like war) allow extreme policies, like freezing debt repayments or even cancelling debt.
America has a different problem because it controls the world's reserve currency. It's been able to print those notes with gay abandon in recent years, but the warning signs of a growing problem are visible.
They are most apparent in the price of gold and Bitcoin, which are perceived as safe-haven assets from the fiat money printers.
So, if politicians are busy destroying the West and only see conflict as a means of maintaining power, how can you trust their judgment should the worst arise?
In that sense, my patriotism and appetite for 'defending the country' is greatly diminished.
That sense was encapsulated in recent research by the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA).
Daniel Wild, Deputy Executive Director at the IPA, said:
“After years of relentless attack on our values by the cultural and media elite, a growing number of young Australians are now so ashamed of themselves, and their country, that they would rather flee Australia than stay and fight for it.”
When the IPA asked those aged 18 - 24 if Australia faced a situation similar to Ukraine, what would be your response, the statistics were:
Across all age groups, just 46% said they would stay and fight.
“It is deeply concerning that less than half of Australians would stay and fight for their country. But it is not surprising given that all you will hear from the elites and the political class is that Australia is an immoral, racist, and illegitimate country.”
Frankly, I'm not surprised.
