There is an old saying that you shall be known by your enemies.

In my view it means your qualities will be marked by those who object to them. For people like me, who have spent decades annoying all the right people, the critics are a source of strength.

There is another saying that 'criticism only hurts when it comes from someone you respect'.

I've been on the receiving end of that side of the equation too
