A New Land of the Free
After a month in Paraguay, the charms of this nation demonstrate it is the new land of the free. Long may that be the case.
My time in Paraguay is coming to an end, and in a couple of days, I'll be flying back to Australia.
It's certainly been an exciting trip, and wouldn't you know it, just before I leave, the Spanish comes babbling out!
I'm not sure what triggered it, but after weeks of hesitation and caution, I can't stop talking to anyone who will listen!!
The poor shop assistants and supermarket staff aren't paid enough to listen to me, but they are all very nice about it!
It caps off a great trip and has taught me a lot about this fascinating country with a fascinating history.
In 1864, Paraguay fought a six-year war against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. It lost land and reportedly 90% of its male population.
Today, they have a nation emerging from poverty and are very proud of their culture. The population is young and welcoming of those bringing investment and opportunity to Paraguay.
Of course, it's far from perfect, but it's also far from the cult of wokeism that is destroying the West.
This is truly the land of the free where, as long as you respect the national values, you can do as you please.
That includes antiquated notions like building what you want on your own land. No council planning permission is needed.
Commercial developments or subdivisions may require a more complicated process, but everything here seems to be about helping the nation develop.
However, that development is within the framework of the Paraguayan constitution, which includes some very specific clauses regarding freedom and liberty.
